The role of music in the church is truly one of ministry. Those who perform music do so for the Glory of God and not their own personal acclaim. Music's function in the liturgy is first and foremost an offering to God and is not a performance as such. The church musician (choir member, instrumentalist, or organist) is a minister--one who serves--one who abandons performance applause to serve the community gathered in God's name.
Vocal music is a vehicle for the expression of sacred text, both by the choir and the worshipping community, presenting expressively which words alone cannot yield. Instrumental music helps to set the appropriate tone for the liturgy--supporting, accompanying and sustaining the teachings of Scripture, yet never dominating or overpowering the Word of God.
The role of choirs and instrumentalists is to
lead the people in musical expression, enhance the liturgy and glorify
God.
Adult Choir
Our dedicated choir serves year-round with the presentation of anthems which represent a wide variety of traditional music styles. A cappella singing (vocal music without instrumental accompaniment) is an option being pursued enthusiastically by the group. Although more difficult and demanding for the singers, the a cappella style is a challenging and musically exciting experience for both the singer and listener. We welcome new-comers. We rehearse each Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m., and at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
We have recently begun "Music 101" for those who wish to learn to read music. We meet at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Please talk to Frank if you'd like to join us.
Youth Choir
Under the direction of Julie Van Devender, the St. James' Youth Choir, performs monthly. Sometimes, they offer a choral prelude; other times they sing during Holy Communion. The Youth Choir rehearses each Sunday after the liturgy.
